Mon Voyage à Bordeaux

Charlie Hebdo letter

Dear Mum and Dad,

I'm sure you have heard about the shootings at the Charlie Hebdo magazine, and I wanted to assure you that I am safe. I was not in my apartment, and I am currently in Bordeaux, which is 584.3 km away (about a 6 hour car ride) from Paris, though my apartment is only about an hour walk away from the scene. The terrorist's reasons for committing this crime are, not exactly unbelievable, though in my opinion they are not that great. The magazine published pictures of Muhammad in a disrespectful way, angering some people. In reply to their anger, the magazine published another picture which was worse than the others. The magazine has their freedom of speech, but this was taking it too far. I'm not saying that they deserved to be shot in their own work place (or at all, that is just where the shootings took place), but they had no reason to try to anger these people more than they already were. There really should be limitations to what can be published if it will affect a certain religion or group of people. There should also be a better way of communicating if something that is published is hurtful so a situation like this doesn't happen again. Then there are those people who are angry at the world and would commit the crime anyways. I find it really scary that nowadays it is so easy for people with bad intentions to buy a gun, go to a place crowded with civilians, and just start shooting. This is all truly horrible. I will be returning home soon, and will be in contact.

Love, Lexi
